Lead Electrical Engineer
Lead Electrical Engineer - Washington, DC
About Current Surgical Inc.
Current Surgical is a startup company developing technology on the frontier of engineering and biology. Our first product is a smart microinvasive needle that precisely destroys tumors without damaging healthy tissue, allowing doctors to treat cancers that are untreatable today.
Our technology is backed by the National Science Foundation, and the company is funded by top tier venture capital firms (True Ventures, 1517, Scifounders) interested in dramatically improving the accuracy and accessibility of surgery.
About you
We are looking for a lead electrical engineer who is excited to develop technology at the forefront of medical devices and precision surgery. You will work directly with the co-founders to design, develop, and test our clinical prototype. This is a difficult hands-on engineering challenge that integrates low-noise electronics, novel MEMS electronics, microfluidics, ultrasound physics, and real-time signal processing.
The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in working at a startup and is eager to challenge their technical development. This is a unique opportunity, as one of the first senior employees, you will have the opportunity to work across many areas of a hardtech biomedical startup, including preclinical studies, interfacing with clinicians, and fundraising. We are expecting you to lead the electronics development, which at this stage requires trading off clinical requirements and engineering needs. As we grow, we envision this role growing into a leadership role.

5-10 years work experience (preferably in regulated product development)
Desired skills
Electrical system and circuit design skills: low-noise circuit design at high bandwidths (10-50 MHz), power delivery for high bandwidth transducers, EMI minimization and signal integrity for integration with data acquisition systems
Electrical fabrication skills: Experience with board stack-up planning, layout requirements, & layout rules, with an emphasis on dense layouts, heat management, and noise isolation. Experience with multiple substrates (flex and PCB) preferred. Familiarity with multiple PCB contract manufacturers.
Familiarity with schematic capture tools, simulation tools, and PCB layout tools (Cadence Allegro, Kicad, or similar).
Hands-on engineer with the proven ability to assemble and troubleshoot complex electrical designs
Test and measurement experience with DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab equipment
Preferred exposure to clean room and microfabrication tools (wire bonding, etc.)
Knowledge of Python for processing test results and test and measurement automation
Digital signal processing and analog signal processing experience is highly desirable
Experience leading electrical subsystem design in a team-based development
